Oh Neglected Blog, what is going on at A Lovely Start...

Yes, I am still around! Things have been busy at A Lovely Start these days. If you are on Facebook, be sure to hop over to our fan page. Things are always hoppin' over there! That is where to be to get all the notices about stockings and lots of special offers, sales and auctions!
I am currently part of an amazing "Character themed" auction at Manely Recycled by Audioamy Fan Page on Facebook! I have this truly unique My Little Pony upcycled longies up for grabs! Auction closes Monday, October 10, 2011!

You can find A Lovely Start stocking regularly at Bitty Fluff on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month and A La Mode on the 15th of the month on Hyena Cart. My own poor Cart has been neglected, but I hope to get a regular monthly or bi-monthly stocking date happening for it as well in the New Year.
Tomorrow, October 7, 2011, I have this fabulous little girls set stocking at Bitty Fluff.

I also have a New Years goal to get back to blogging regularly as well. In addition to highlighting the items I am working on, I would like to write some general Cloth Diapering and other posts that represent me, my philosophies and my business, as well as answer some common questions I get.

I am excited to announce A Lovely Start has become a regular vendor on two popular Hyena Cart Congos! A La Mode and Bitty Fluff have welcomed me to their groups of talented mamas and you will now be able to find me stocking my wares each month on these great congos!

What is a Congo, you ask?
A congo is like a little online "mall" or "craft fair" where all the vendors work together to offer the shopper a nice variety of products from one location.
You must sing up for a Hyena Cart account to purchase from here, but it is easy and essential the same as purchasing directly from me.

Bitty Fluff Congo
Bitty Fluff is such a fun congo as it is All Newborn, All the Time! I just love making itty bitty newbie stuff. I will be stocking on Bitty Fluff on the first Friday of the month and usually on the third Friday as well. I was a guest vendor with these wonderful ladies in March and I was flattered to be invited to join them on a regular basis starting in April! I will be adding them to my product line. These Deluxe Waterproof Change Pads are very luxurious for your baby. They are topped with ultra soft Minky which stays soft wash after wash. Under the Minky, there is a layer of absorbent fabric to soak up any messes and to add some cushion. Then there is some PUL to make the Change Pad Waterproof and a layer of fashion cotton because, well... because we all love pretty things!
I have a semi custom listing on Hyena Cart for a few current combinations I have available and I will be adding some fun new options soon! To round out the perfect gift, add a matching wetbag or some wipes!

Christmas Break!

A Lovely Start is taking a much needed Christmas Break to enjoy all the blessings and beauty of the season with my family!

I will be offline for the month of December. Custom Diapers...

I am trying to enjoy the summer and the children as much as possible, so I have been taking a bit of a hiatus from computers and orders. But I am still here and will be back in full force come fall!!

In the mean time I wanted to share some of the custom diaper orders I have been working on this summer.

XSmall constructions print and a Medium Fast Cars print Quick Dry Bamboo Fitteds.

This one is a Medium Quick Dry Bamboo Fitted with an additional stay-dry topped night doubler.

I am testing out a onesize diaper pattern I developed this summer. I have never been a huge fan of onesize diapers, but I thought I would dabble a bit. The green one with black snaps is being tested by my 2 year old and the Cute Cow print is off to a little newbie to try out!

These are XL pocket diapers that I would also like to test as pocket trainers. In the first picture, they are stuffed with a nice thick trifold bamboo fleece insert and in the second picture they have a thinner microfiber insert. These are Robots, Aliens, and solid periwinkle.

A Lovely Gift for a Lovely Little Man...

A few weeks ago I did some hand dying for the first time on some wool. (which I have been meaning to post about...now on my blogging to-do list!) It was so fun and seeing the new colors at the end was very rewarding.

I have been dying - pun intended - to try it out on some organic bamboo velour. So when hubby brought my new roll home I couldn't wait to get some color on some. I could not find any fabric-reactive dye locally, so I used a tie dye type dye this time until I have a chance to order some proper dye. I think it turned out quite nice and the dye set up better than I expected. After a couple washes, there is not trace of any color running.

I used turquoise and steel blue dye and 'crinkle' dyed a couple pieces of OBV. Then I sewed the front panel in a patchwork style and attached a solid back to it then top stitched all around. It is the softest squishiest blanket! I sure hope it is loved by the sweet little boy it is on its way too!

A few Wetbags and Pail Liners...

Wetbags and pail liners are a great way to 'handle' your soiled diapers without actually 'handling' them! Pail liners can be placed inside nearly any type of bucket, garbage can or diaper pail to make a great "dry pail" storage system. When baby is changed, simply dump any solids in the toilet then toss the entire diaper in the liner. On laundry day, take the entire liner to the washing machine, dump the diapers and then toss in the bag. Easy Peasy! Be sure to have a second liner on hand for when one is in the wash!

Wetbags are a must have when cloth diapering or for anyone with a baby or toddler. Simply put your soiled diaper in the wetbag and toss it back in your diaper bag. The PUL and zippered top keep moisture and smell contained until you can get home. Unzip the bag and toss the entire thing in the diaper pail or washing machine. A small bag is handy to keep one diaper and a couple wipes in for emergencies - keep one in the diaper bag, one in the car and one at Grandma's! Larger bags are great for daycare or longer outings. And they are awesome to have handy to toss soiled outfits, training pants, bibs and washcloths in when unexpected accidents happen on the go! Don't forget to take them with you to the pool for that wet swimsuit as well!

A Lovely Custom for A Lovely Mama!

I had such fun creating this wonderful custom order. I had just received this pink pony print and couldn't wait to turn it into something lovely. It soon became two squishy Quick Dry Bamboo Fitted Diapers with extra microfleece-topped nighttime doubler.

Next I created two fleece soakers to put over those sweet little diapers to keep this little one dry all night long! One soaker was created to match the pony themed fabric and the other is one of my faves, a cupcake bum!

Ditto Daddy Night Trainers, too!
Well, we couldn't leave out big brother! He needed some new nighttime trainers to keep his sheets dry. We are trying a couple options here. A two layer brief coupled with a beefed up insert backed with PUL for extra protection, should be a great combo to keep wetness contained. We are also trying a fleece boxer brief with a regular PUL backed insert, as well as a non-PUL insert. It was important to incorporate some orange into these for this little guy, so the snaps are all orange, PUL is orange, and the brief is lined with orange. And what boy can resist some fast cars with orange flames coming out the back!

Potty learning Daddy Ditto style!

I am excited to have this fabulous boy stash of Ditto Daddy trainers packaged and ready to ship to a very patient mama! This stash of Ditto Daddy Briefs are constructed from a layer of cotton knit print outer and a smooth bamboo lining. Each trainer comes with a snap-in insert made from 2 layers of bamboo fleece, topped with a layer of bamboo velour and backed with a layer of PUL for a bit of moisture resistance.

I hope these great prints and fun colors encourage this little boy to keep his unders dry and clean! Happy potty learning!

It's a Snap! Some BumGenius Snap Conversions...

I just finished up a bunch of snap conversions for some terrific local mamas! I ordered in some of the BumGenius matching snaps for these and have decided I do really like the look. I typically like contrasting colors more than matching, so I am glad one mama let me do a few with a bit of contrast.

One dozen freshly converted BGOS all in the "new" bright colors with perfectly matched snaps. They are so pretty!

17 BGOS original colors - 14 with perfectly matched snaps, and 3 with a little contrast! I also added a snap to the top of each of the "newborn' inserts. This mama uses her NB inserts as doublers and is tired of reaching into the wet diaper pocket to fish it out. Now she can simply snap it to the regular insert and they will pull out together! Great idea mama!

Two-Handle Hanging Diaper Pails and a wetbag...

This custom order consists of 2 two-handle hanging diaper pails and a matching large wetbag. I think these are going to be baby gifts for a couple lucky mamas!

These diaper pails are fantastic! They save on space - hang them from a change table in the nursery or a towel bar in the bathroom. The inner waterproof PUL layer is sewn completely separate from the outer decorative cotton layer layer to prevent moisture wicking out of the bag. The two-handle design keeps them hanging neatly and puts less stress on the fabric for a long life.

Here is the entire order together. I think this is the only picture you can really see the handles. they are a pretty chocolate brown, but I had trouble getting them to show up in the dark background in the other photos.

Girly Ditto Daddy Dry Nights Briefs...

This set of Dry Nights Briefs has been created for a little girl to give her some nighttime confidence! These size 4 briefs feature a mock-fly which gives the wet zone of the briefs a double layer of fleece for extra protection. They come with a beefed up insert backed with PUL and a snap on doubler. When used together that is 7 layers of absorbent bamboo to keep the sheets dry at night!

An Adorable Stash of Girly Ditto Daddy Briefs...

I tend to do a lot of Ditto Daddy Trainers for boys, so I have been thrilled to be working lately on some girly trainers. This is a stash of trainers for a petite little girl. The leg and waist measurements of this little girl would make finding stocked trainers a little difficult. This stash should take her through the different stages of potty learning and keep her covered day and night. I hope she enjoys wearing these as much as I enjoyed sewing them!

These are just adorable! Trendy 100% cotton print outer layer with an
inner layer of soft bamboo make these trainers absorbent even without
the insert! Your little one can wear these as underwear after they
have gained more potty confidence. Each trainer is equipped with one
standard snap-in bamboo insert backed with waterproof PUL.

Inside of a Ditto Daddy brief lined with soft bamboo. Notice the trainer has no inner side seams or leg seams to cause irritation. The inner "knap-flap" that the insert snaps onto is sewn in separately to allow the insert to stretch and adjust for the perfect fit!
These four pair of trainers are made from soft cozy fleece and include a beefed-up snap-in insert. These are great for early daytime learning, outings, and for light to medium coverage for overnight.
Two Dry Nights Ditto Daddy Briefs. These are sewn with 2 full layers of fleece to keep wetness contained. Each includes 1 beefed-up insert with doubler. Inserts are made from bamboo fleece and topped with silky bamboo velour and then backed with a layer of PUL. There is a total of 7 layers of bamboo to keep this little one dry all night!
Three extra snap-in inserts made from 2 layers of bamboo fleece topped with silky bamboo velour. These thinner, lightweight inserts have no backing and will be great as a 'reassurance' once little one has gained some confidence with her potty learning.
Two fleece soaker to use over the cotton trainers in the very early stages to keep wetness in.

A Lovely Trade!

I think I have mentioned before, I love to do trades with other mamas. I had the privilege to work with a wonderful knitting mama over the past couple months as we both completed some wonderful items. I absolutely can not wait to get my hands on the adorable knit woolies she has created for me. Here are the items I made for her.

Here is a large wetbag with a snapping handle and a matching small wetbag. These are done in Michael Miller's "Rustic Guitars" print. I love this adorable print!
This is the very last of my Butterfly Frenzy print made into a medium wetbag. It comes complete with a pocket full of soft bamboo wipe-ups!
Two of my round two Quick Dry fitteds in a very cute multicolored owls print. These diapers have a cotton outer, squishy soft bamboo velour inner, a hidden layers of bamboo fleece and bamboo fleece soakers topped with velour. These two feature snaps with engraved owls.
And last but not least, my "surprise soaker". I so hope you like it, Mama! This medium soaker is made with the softest cashmere wool I have ever felt. The embellishments on the back hold a very special meaning for me. The mama's embracing arms are full of openness and love as the tiny baby grows in her heart.

Teeny Tiny PREEMIE Diapers!

When my daughter was born, we were expecting a very tiny peanut, so I whipped up some very tiny diapers - in a hurry! Well, she shocked us all and entered this world a whopping 6 pounds - about 2 pounds bigger then we expected! She did fit her little diapers for a few weeks, but never on the smallest settings.

Well last week I was overjoyed to find out that her tiny stash would be put to use. A very sweet mama brought her tiny preemie baby boy home at about 4 pounds and really needed some diapers to fit his teeny bottom. And she was kind enough to share some pictures of her tiny little boy!

So without further ado...

Lady Bug Gift Sets...

A while back I made an Itty Bitty Pocket Diaper that was red with black snaps and my son named it "Lady Bug". I fell in love with that diaper and received many compliments about it. Several months later, I found this adorable red, white and black fabric that I knew needed to become friends with "Lady Bug"! (and the many offsping I have been creating all also named "Lady Bug"!) So I created a couple gift sets for friends that were expecting. The set below is "Lady Bug" with a pillow topped change pad and wetbag. "Lady Bug" also took along a wetbag and went to live with a very sweet mama and her Christmas Eve Blessing! My only regret, I didn't buy more of this fabric! I only have enough left for about two more sets.

First and foremost:
MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The past month or so has been busy with Christmas prep, family craziness, and trying to get some orders finished up as well. Now that my sweet hubby has revived our computer network and I can once again access my pictures and such, I will try to catch up on posts of all the new things I have been working on around here!

I finally completed an order for a wonderful (and patient) mama who is due with her 4th baby on the 8th of January. She has cloth diapered two of her children but this is the first baby she is planning to diaper right from newborn! Yay! She is keeping baby's gender a surprise, so we did up a dozen Newborn/Small pocket diapers. These diapers should fit approximately 6 - 15 lbs.

This set of one dozen pocket diapers is complete with a dozen zorb/bamboo inserts, 4 terry towel tri-folds that can be used as either insert doublers or large wipes, 4 two-layer microfiber doubler inserts, half a dozen fleece liners and one dozen bamboo velour/bamboo terry wipe-ups. (I forgot to take pictures of all the extras, oops!)
We also made a medium sized two-handle hanging diaper pail with matching change pad for her main floor bathroom.
And one more change pad. Both pads are constructed from an attractive cotton print outer, hidden waterproof PUL, hidden flannel for a little extra softness and absorbency, then topped with soft and cozy molten fleece.

Diapers! Bamboo Fitteds and some Itty Bitty's...

I have some requests for diapers and my own stash desperately needs a few new diapers as well. Some diapers flew out the door before I photographed them and some are all cut and still waiting to be sewn. But I do have a sampling of some of them here.

After getting a bit of feedback from my first round of tester fitteds that went out this summer, I have made a few modifications to the medium Quick Dry Fitted. I am working on another run of these squishy soft diapers. I have completed half a dozen, 3 for orders - 3 for my tiny princess! The elastics are a bit looser and softer than the first run, the soaker and doubler have been modified as well. The doubler is just up front, but it is a bit wider for more coverage. The soaker is now the same width at the front and back for better coverage as well.

Now that I think I am ironing out my Medium Quick Dry Fitted pattern quite nicely, I decided to try out a couple Newborn fitted diapers! These two little diapers are not Quick Dry - they have a 3-4 layer hidden sewn-in soaker for quick and easy newborn changes. I did not make doublers for these as they have a total of 6-7 layers, which should be enough for the frequent changes a newborn baby requires. I did a front snapping closure with umbilical snap down and a side snapping closure diaper. The sizing on these should be about 6 - 16 pounds, but I still need to test them out a little to know for sure.

I recently worked with a wonderful mama on a partial trade. Elaine from Tata Tushies, created some beautiful knit longie sets for me and in turn, I created some soft and cuddly fleece longies, a diaper and some beach pants for her. I love doing trades! They are such fun as you get to indulge a bit in some items you may not have searched out and purchased otherwise.

First are my oringinal Ooga Booga Beach Pants, featuring two snap positions to secure roll in place, leg and bum pockets, embellished knee, and an adorable little Ooga peeking out of the back pocket.A spin off of the Ooga's - I now have Iced Giraffes Beach Pants! These are adorable and the colors really show off the giraffes in the fabric.Next is a pair of Steel Blue longies embellished with a little train on the leg. These longies feature my Grow-With-Me cuff for longer wear.And last is a cute set including my improved medium bamboo quick dry fitted with lay in soaker and an adorable pair of small Ooga Girl longies.

I am wading through a pile of things I have cut and ready to sew! This week was a 'fleecey' kind of week...

First up is a custom order for a very sweet and patient mama! She needed a couple options for her little man for sleeping. She has tried one of the cotton boxer briefs for naps and decided to get one more since they are working well.
Ditto Daddy Boxer Briefs in "Construction" print cotton!
She also wanted something with a lot more absorbency and protection for overnight. She decided to try a Dry Nights Ditto Daddy Boxer with a Beefed-Up insert. Here they are, in all steel-blue fleece. I hope they work well for you!
The rest of my Dry Nights Ditto Daddy Boxer for Girls order is now complete and have found their new home. Word has it there is a very happy 3 1/2 year old little girl that loves her new "Jammies".

This week we returned from a beautiful weekend camping and prepared for a wonderfully fun 3rd birthday party for my sweet Tool Boy. But I did manage to squeeze in a few orders.

First up are 8 Bum Genius All-In-Ones and 1 Bum Genius One Size that were in need of a little TLC. Their tired velcro was replaced with some great snaps! I had lots if fun putting together some cute snap color combonations on these diapers.
This is an All Day size wetbag and zippered wipes pouch created for a sweet mama for daycare use.

I created a couple sets of tester inserts for G-diapers. These 3 inserts each have a different combination: Microfleece/microfiber/hemp, Microfleece/Zorb/hemp, bamboo fleece/bamboo fleece/bamboo velour.
I also started to create a wool-in-one for my little girl to use for nighttime. I used a nice thick sweater for the outer layer and a soft thinner merino wool sweater for the inner layer to combine for a bullet proof night solution. The only problem is, Tool Boy got ahold of it before I could finish it up and decided that it shoud be his. So the snap-in bamboo insert has been left out and it is now a wool snap wrap for my son. I will have to find a pick sweater to make one for Little Miss as Tool Boy will not let pink near him!

A gift set and some odds and ends...

I was pretty excited to cut into my Michael Miller "Rustic Guitars" fabric for this custom wetbag/change pad gift set. I started with the change pad and ended up with something wonderful, but when I went to work on the wetbag, I realized I had overdone it with the size of the change pad! The set is meant to have a wetbag with a pocket that neatly holds a change pad for when you are out and about. So I went back to the cutting mat and created a reversible change pad that was travel size - not home size!

I love how this set turned out! This picture shows the set opened up with the corner flipped to reveal the coordinating Rock'n'Roll fabric.
All packed up and ready to go! There is enough room left in the pocket to stuff a couple wipes as well.
And here is the first reversible change pad. It is pretty cute, though it has some slightly crooked stitching around the edge. Nothing that will effect performance though. Not sure yet if I am going to keep this one or post it in my Instock Items or make a set with it...hmmmmm
I had a mama purchase some Dry Nights Ditto Daddy Boxers with Beefed-up inserts and doublers from me a little while back. She loves them and needed some more so she found some gently loved ones and scoped them up. The only problem was the inserts were not enough for her heavy night wetter. We came up with a Beefed-up doubler insert to work with her single snapping boxers. Hopefully these will keep her son leak-free and sleeping soundly!
And last but not least, a cute little fleece soaker for sweet mama!

Quick Dry Fitted with Targeted Wetness Control
Update (March 7, 2010): Testers have returned some great feedback! Round 2 of these fabulous diapers has begun with a few going out already and a few in use in my stash. The improvements have made these diapers the favorite in my fitted stash! Check out the newest edition of the Quick Dry Fitted with Targeted Wetness Control in this post!

Over the past several months, I have had a number of requests for bamboo fitted diapers. I want to be sure the items I sell are items I believe in, have tried, and would use, so my two little monkeys became my testers once again! I worked on creating a diaper that took into account the things that are important to me: maximum absorbency where needed, reduce bum bulk, quick dry, and maximum stretch to improve fit. So was born the Quick Dry Fitted with Targeted Wetness Control!I prefer a sized diaper. I just can't do the one sized diaper on an itty bitty and I find that many one sized diapers I have tried, are no longer a good fit for my 30 pound three year old who is still in diapers. So I have come up with 3 sizes of fitteds: newborn/small, medium, and large. My medium diaper is the first one I am testing. I have been quite happy with the range of fit and I am looking forward to some testers with different sized babies to try this one. I estimate it to fit from about 15 - 27 pounds. These fit my 22 pound, 13 month old daughter with plenty of smaller settings and they also fit my skinny, 32 pound, 3 year old son on the biggest setting.
These diapers consist of a cotton knit outer layer and bamboo velour inner. The hidden layers differ: Style 1 is cotton rib which helps maximize stretch for a great fit. Style 2 has bamboo fleece as the hidden layer which increases the absorbency of the diaper body, but reduces stretch slightly and will have a slightly longer drying time. Both come with a full soaker and a targeted doubler - each made from 3-layers of bamboo (2 fleece and one velour). The targeted doubler is meant to fit under the full soaker in the spot you need it most - up front for boys, middle for girls. This reduces the extra padding in the bum area yet still offers great absorbency!
Tester Diapers are all spoken for and are hopefully getting some love in their new homes! I am anxiously awaiting feedback from my testers!

It's been a busy summer!

Summer has been busy this year! My precious daughter, Little Miss, turned 1 years old in July. She is a growing concern, that one! Especially as she is learning from and trying to keep up to her big brother, Tool Boy, who will be 3 years old in a couple weeks. The children, along with a traveling hubby, my yard, garden, and canning have kept me hopping, but I have still been able to get some sewing time in the evenings when the babes have been all tucked in! Here are a few of the custom orders and projects I have had on the go in the past couple weeks...

I made a couple more pairs of Dry Nights Ditto Daddy Boxers for a really sweet mama. She has been using these for her oldest son for about 6 months now and has said they work great. I now have to get to completing some for her 3.5 year old daughter!
These adorable little recycled wool longies are posted in my Instock Items. They were just sitting on my desk begging to be completed! The medium weight wool on these is really nice.
This cute pair of Ditto Daddy Briefs with hidden PUL were made for a great mama for her daughter who is learning night control. She wanted 'panties' to wear with her nighties rather than boxers.
A dozen BGOS got a little rehab! Bye Bye Velcro, Hello Snaps! Have I mentioned, I love snaps! :)

And last but by all means not least, a pair of cotton pajama pants with dump trucks and cement mixers for Tool Boy! My children are in desperate need of some Fall/Winter items, so I will be sneaking those in where I can!

Fabulous Wetbags Sets...

I recently finished up some custom wetbags and wetbag sets for some wonderful mamas! Since my customs wait time has been quite long this summer, I decided to do up some multiples of some of these and put them in my Instock Items. If you are looking for a cute gift set or a new wetbag for yourself, go take a peek and see if there is something you like ready to ship!

This set was a custom for a new mama looking for an everyday wetbag and cute pool/beach option all in one! We came up with this set. It includes 2 wetbags which are mirror images of each other. The bags may be used individually or as a set. Each bag has a row of snaps at the top and one at the bottom to attach the bags securely together. This set also includes a PUL lined snapping pouch to keep track of the little things. Keep a few damp wipes in there or use it to keep hair clips, bank card or money dry at the pool. Each wetbag is lined with PUL to keep wetness contained or dry items dry!
Two bags all snapped up! The double handles are great to attach to a towel bar, stroller handle, change table or anywhere for easy access!
These sets include a generous sized wetbag and a matching wipes bag.
All wetbags have strong zipper closures to keep smells trapped inside and PUL lining sewn separately to prevent moisture from wicking out of the bag.
This set of 3 bags will fit 1-2 diapers each. They are perfect to keep individually packed in your diaper bag with a diaper and a couple wipes in each. Then when you are out, you can just grab one out of the diaper bag and head to the washroom for a quick and easy change. Take out the clean one, put back to soiled one and you are ready to go! Nice and neat and clean!

Snap Conversions...

These are a few of the recent conversions I have done to give new life to some tired velcro diapers with some fun and very functional snaps! These are all one size pocket diapers.

This one is a Grasshopper BumGenius with a single row of Periwinkle colored snaps.

This is a white DriStuff with fun red and black snaps.

This black Happy Heiny has a 3rd snap added on each wing to eliminate wing droop.

I folded in the side of this cow print Happy Heiny to shorten up the wings and help with wing droop.

Dry Nights Ditto Daddy Fleece Boxers!

I've been working on some more Dry Nights Ditto Daddy Boxers for older childern lately. These are a wonderful option for older childern that can not stay dry through the night yet. I have been learning how common this is especially in boys. These Boxers give them a cloth option that really gives them confidence because they look just like they are wearing jammies and they really work!

These Boxers work so well because they have an inner fleece trainer that fits snug and holds the insert against the child's body to prevent leaks. The roomy outer fleece boxer gives them a Big Boy look while offering a second layer of protection against leaks. An optional third layer of protection is given when the insert is backed with PUL. These can accommodate even the heaviest wetters when they use the "beefed up" night insert and doubler. Yes the can become a bit bulky, but they are for overnight.

With the soft fleece body and velour topped insert, even with the extra bulk, these boxers are very comfortable. In the words of one little boy that wears them, "They are so soft! Feel them!"

This is showing the comparison of inserts. The 1st is the "Beefed-up" night time insert. The 2nd is the regular insert used in the Boxer Briefs and Dry Nights Boxers. The 3rd insert is used in the Briefs and in Daytime Boxers.
The above pair of boxers has two rows of snap to accommodate two insert. The double insert option for heavy wetters combines the "Beefed-up" insert and the regular Briefs insert and stacks them up for the ultimate protection.

I took a night to work on my diaper patterns and make a couple squishy soft cotton and bamboo diapers for my babes! I can't wait to toss them in the wash and give them a try. Now I just need a little newborn to try the small one on!

One Large and one NewBorn/Small Fitted Diaper
This is a little NB/small fitted diaper with cotton knit outer, bamboo terry inner and a hidden layer of cotton. The lay in soaker is made of 3 layers of bamboo terry and fleece, topped with bamboo velour and backed with coordinating cotton kit. It feature an umbilical snap down front.

Next is the L with cotton knit outer, bamboo terry inner and a hidden layer of cotton. I made 2 lay in soakers, each made of 2 layers of bamboo fleece, topped with bamboo velour and backed with coordinating cotton kit.

Recently, I have been working on is a bunch of orders for Ditto Daddy trainers in many different styles. Here are a few of the completed ones.

Fleece Boxer Briefs with girl detailing instead of the mock-fly.
Two pair of cotton Boy Boxer Briefs.
Two pair of Dry Nights Ditto Daddy Boxers to wear for night time accidents. These are made in all fleece and have an extra set of inserts for each. They are a bit bulky but will be worn as P.J.'s so it will be fine.
This shows the inside of the Boxer. There is a separate trainer inside to give two layers of protection from leaks.
Two pair fleece Briefs. The fly detailing would make these a little to bulky to wear under clothes but when kept plain, they are trim enough to slip a loose fitting pair of pants or short over.
The lighting on the next two pictures are terrible! I did not get better shots before they went out.
The polkadot Briefs with white trim are all cotton. The other three pair are made with a hidden layer of PUL and inner layer of soft bamboo.

I have done several recycled wool projects lately, which I love to do so much! There is something so satisfying about 'saving' a sweater from the wasteland and creating cute wears that have real function for our little ones. I have several more of these currently on the go, but here are the ones I have now completed.
These medium flared bottom woolies are so cute with a leather trim along the bottom. I have some adorable wool and leather slippers on the go to match these!

Newborn stuff is always so fun to sew! This rainbow of pockets are newborn/small size, side-snapping diapers. They are lined with super soft microfleece to keep baby's bottom feeling nice and dry. Each one has a thirsty contoured bamboo insert to give this diaper a nice trim fit! This pattern fit my little girl from newborn (she was just over 6 pounds) until she was a chunky 5 month old.

I hear it all the time since I have started using cloth and sewing my wears... "Isn't it hot for your little ones to wear fleece and wool in the summer?" No way! It is cooler on their little tush then a 'sposie or a PUL pocket or PUL cover as well.

This was on The Diaper Pin a couple years ago and I found it quite interesting. I no longer have a link to the original post, but I had saved a copy and just wanted to share. A mom with a teen did this science experiment (Temperatures in Fahrenheit):

Baby Gift Set...

I was asked to come up with a gift set for a cloth diapering mama. I enjoyed this project as I would have loved some cloth diaper friendly gifts when my second baby came around. I stuck to fun and funky earthy colors as the gender of baby is a surprise.
This set consists of 1 small basic wetbag, 1 change pad - cotton backed and bamboo topped with hidden layer of PUL, 1 small side snapping pocket diaper with a 4 layer bamboo insert, and 3 small bamboo terry/bamboo velour wipe-ups. This gift set could easily be switched up for a non-cloth using mama as well. Switch the wipe-ups and diaper out for a bib and burp cloth. I think a wetbag would be loved by both cloth and non-cloth mamas. Soiled clothing, messy burp cloths and dirty bibs can really muck up a diaper bag!

I am back in the sewing room after spending an extended Easter weekend relaxing with my family. While the break was nice, I am now trying to get caught up on orders! I have a few custom orders for trainers on the go right now which I am hoping to have all complete very very soon! Here is the first complete order...

Two pair of fleece and two pair of cotton Ditto Daddy Boy Briefs. Each trainer comes with one snap-in insert made from wonderful Bamboo fabrics. Two of the inserts are backed with PUL for added water resistance with the cotton trainers. My improved inserts have stitching down the center that create channels to help keep the liquid on the insert where it belongs!
Here are the two fleece pair with their inserts.
And the two cotton knit pair. "On the Go" is a jersey knit and the "Tree Frogs" is a rib knit.

Custom Wetbags and Pail liners...

This week has been Wetbag Week! I have several custom orders on the go and I fell into a groove making the wetbag portion of my customs.

This bag is a solution for daycare and g-diapers. This mama wanted to be able to keep the insert separate from the cover in a clear way for her child's caregivers to use. So we came up with this Double Wet/Wet bag. This bag features two sides that snap together at the top. Both sides are lined with PUL and have zipper closures. The zippers are done in different colors with a label attached to the zipper pull to give a clear visual of what is to go in each side.
Next up is a Grab n' Go Wet/Dry bag. I had two orders for this identical bag, so here they are together. One side is lined with PUL and has a zipper closure while the other side has cotton lining and snap closure. Each of these bags comes with a little snap closure pouch for an extra snappi, pins paci, or any other small item that often gets lost at the bottom of the bag!
This is a basic medium wetbag in Michael Miller's "Lotus" print.
And last up are three pail liners. The ocean colored one is taken of the inside showing the cotton patch for adding TTO or lavender oil to mask any unwanted smells. The pail liners go in the pail with the shiny PUL side out.

Ooga Booga Beach Pants and Ditto Daddy Girl Boxer Trainers...

I had a fantastic mama request a pair of custom Beach Pants and ohhhh, I am in love with these. These little blue and orange Ooga Booga Beach Pants feature a roll up cuff that snaps securely up to convert longies to board shorts or manpris. They also feature an open pocket because every little boy needs a place to store rocks and bugs and other "boy" stuff. (Sorry the pictures are not the greatest - my hubby has my good camera on a business trip!)

I took a couple days off sewing for others to "clear my desk"! The back of my sewing desk was piled with projects I had started for my babes but not finished. The pile was beginning to overtake my cutting mat, so I got to work getting things done.

Here are pictures of a few of the projects I completed.

Fitted diapers for Tool Boy and Little Miss. I was doing some pattern and fabric testing a while back and had a ton of layers and pieces cut out. I stacked them all up and ended up with 5 diapers. These are made using a variety of fabrics: print flannel, diaper flannel, cotton knits, minky, bamboo fleece, bamboo terry, bamboo velour...and possibly others!
And the inside of one of the yummy bamboo diapers!
Tool boy wanted me to make him some slippers, so here are his Ooga Booga slipper!
And last but not least, Tool Boy wanted to help Mommy make his little friend a pair of slippers with matching undies!

I really enjoyed meeting and working with this mama! She has two wonderful babes that I was able to sew up some wears for!

I love how soft this 30" x 30" floor pad is. The perfect place for any babe to snuggle in and have some naked time! It is backed with a fashionable cotton print and topped with squishy sherpa. There is a hidden layer of PUL to make it waterproof and flannel to make it both absorbent and to give a little extra cushion.
What do you do when you still want to have some cute recycled wool for your toddler, but they are to tall to use the sleeves the conventional way? Well, you give them some piratical knee pads, of course! They will come in handy for all the time spent on the floor playing with cars. These are wool longies for a 3 year old boy. I added a three layer knee pad. These would also be great for crawlers!
Here are two pair of Ditto Daddy Boxer Briefs done in fleece for early potty training. The inserts are 4 layers of squishy bamboo backed with PUL for extra protection and topped with feel-dry microfleece.This little recycled wool soaker is nightworthy! The soft, felted wool is nice and thick and has an extra layer in the wetzone for added protection.These are four little pair of microfleece "underwear". They will put a full, stay-in-place, feel-dry layer between baby and a fitted diaper. Great for little ones that are extra sensitive to wetness, especially at night.

Recently I made some ity, bity newborn covers for a young mama-to-be expecting twin baby boys in a few months! It is so wonderful to see young women choosing to use cloth diapers! Hooray! I imagine diapering twins will be a bit rough in the start, but oh boy, double the cute fluffy bums!! Oh, how sewing those tiny pieces puts thoughts of newborns back in my head!

My stash of wool sweaters is piling up! I have lots of ideas but not enough time, so I thought I would post some pictures of the sweaters and offer them up as customs. I can do longies, shorties, soakers and possibly some other cute ideas that have been coming my way. Choose a sweater or color from here, then send me an email with what items you would like, size and measurments. I will reply with pricing and timeline. I just finished up a few custom orders for a great Mama who is lots of fun to work with! These were fun to do - especially the train longies! Tool Boy has his eyes on those, I better get them in the mail quick!
First up is for a medium two-handle hanging wetbag/diaper pail. This has a Michael Miller "Dandy Damask" cotton print outer layer with chocolate brown PUL inside, sewn separately to prevent wicking, and topped with a coordinating beige zipper.
Next are two pair of fleece longies. Both pair feature my grow-with-me cuff. The contrasting cuff is flipped up and stitched in 4 places so it stays put. When your little one hits a growth spurt, the treads can be easily located and snipped to extend the length of the longies by 1 inch to 1.5 inches!

Hanging Diaper Pail...

I had a request from another mama to make an affordable hanging wetbag or hanging diaper pail. She was having a tough time finding one that had snapping two handles or straps so she could hang it neatly on her change table. Hanging wetbags are commonly made with one handle that can be looped over a doorknob. I had been thinking of this idea before so I was excited to have a reason to create!!

So here it is, the two handle hanging wetbag/diaper pail! I love how it turned out and it looks so good hanging on my daughters change table, I may have to sew up another to live at our house! It is great to hang on a change table, a clothes bar in the closet or a towel bar in the bathroom.

Just like all my wetbags, these have a cotton outer layer and a waterproof PUL inner layer sewn separately to prevent moister from wicking onto the cotton and a zipper closure to keep odours in the bag.

I also made a 'mini' version as a prototype and I actually really like it as well. It is great to hang in the main floor bathroom for those time when you need a quick change. The front pouch can hold a few wipe and some wipe spray or even a small diaper. I especially would have use this when I had a newborn in the house and didn't want to run up to the nursery every change.
I also love to use it in the kitchen for all my wipe-up cloths and soiled kitchen clothes.

Converting G-diapers from velcro to snaps...

Some may love velcro, but I am not a big fan of it! I use snaps on most of the projects I do. Velcro does have its benifits; it is great for daycare, sitters, Daddies and Grandparents. I have some velcro diapers that I have bought and if those laundry tabs are not pressed down solid, they let go and stick to whatever they can! So if I have the choice... its snaps all the way!

Apparently I am not alone...
I converted some G-diapers to snaps for a sweet mama. She is really happy with them and is sending more my way!
These are old style, medium little g-pants. They now have three snap settings on them instead of velcro.

Thinking about Potty Training...

So Tool Boy is almost 2 and a half years old now and I've got potty training on the brain! I bought this great pattern for Ditto Daddy boxers to start sewing up some training pants. These are the cutest things ever! They look like Daddy's boxers but have a soaker pad in them that you can snap in when needed, and then when they are trained, leave it out and wear the boxers as underwear! How clever! I bought the boy and girl patterns so I could sew some up for Little Miss as well.
These are neat since you can customize the absorbency for day or night and have different levels of absorbent soakers for the same underwear just by changing the soaker pad. The soaker pad can be backed with water resistant PUL to help keep clothes a little dryer in case of accidents. They can be made from cotton knit to really look and feel like underwear, or to give some extra wetness protection, the outer layer can be fleece or wool.
I have made a few pair now and am very pleased with how they are coming together!

Wetbags! Not just for cloth diapers...

I have been having fun sewing up some wetbags lately. These are used in the Cloth Diaper world to hold your soiled diapers when you are out and about.
But that is not all... these are a cute and unique shower/baby gift for those who do not use cloth as well. Have you ever been out and your baby has a major blowout, soiling their entire outfit? Or in a public place that does not have a garbage for your dirty diaper? A wetbag is great to have in your diaper bag to keep the messes contained! It is reusable, takes up about the same space a couple plastic bags would and it is cute! They are also great for the pool or beach, put wet bathing suits in or keep clothes and other items dry.

All my wetbags are sewn with a cotton outer and PUL inner. The layers are sewn separately to prevent wicking of the inner moisture onto the cotton outer from occurring.

I call this one the Grab 'n Go Wet/Dry Bag! One side has a zipper closure and is lined with PUL, a water resistant fabric, and the other side has snap closure and is lined with cotton. The two sides snap together at the top. Keep clean diapers, wipes, and wipe spray in the cotton side and stuff soiled diapers in the PUL side. This bag is great to keep handy with clean supplies to grab in a hurry or keep one in the car. You can toss a snack in there and leave the diaper bag at home!

Tool Boy wanted a "Hacksaw Bum" soaker and since he asked so sweetly, well who could say no...
After that, I had to make Little Miss one too. Tool Boy calls this one "Flower Bum"...

I've been doing some custom shorties for a sweet mama. These are all made of fleece and are used as a diaper cover. She is using them for night time over fitted diapers. These are large or about a size 2. They are so fun to do and I found a bunch of cute prints the other day. The prints have a sewn in 'diaper hammock' to give a little extra wetness protection.

I had the privilege to meet a super sweet cloth diapering mama in my area. I did some projects for her in return for a few things! Trades are so fun.Mamas helping each other out, sharing their talents and in the end, you both end up with wonderful and useful stuff!

I converted some Little g-pants to have snap closures. She didn't care for the velcro they originally had and I think she really likes the snaps now.

Hi! I am Michelle, a SAHM (stay at home mom) of two sweet babies. My son, AKA Tool Boy, is 2.5 years old and my daughter, AKA Little Miss, is 7 months old. I have always been a 'crafty' person and have enjoyed sewing, scrap booking, card making, and all sorts of crafty things. My new passion is diaper making!
I began cloth diapering my son at about one year old when we couldn't find a solution to keep him dry at night. Soon after I caught the cloth diaper bug and was full time cloth diapering him. I started buying supplies and making some diapers and accessories for him as well. Well soon his diaper drawer was full, so I was delighted when my daughter came along to start sewing for! I made her complete newborn stash. It was so fun.
So now that I have a bit more time, I love sewing for other mama's too. If someone told me 10 years ago that I would be cloth diapering my kids and loving it, I would have thought they were crazy! But here I am. lol And it is cute and fun and a creative outlet...

These adorable trainers are constructed to look just like big kid or even adult underwear. They give your potty learner the incentive to stay dry and feel grown up.
All trainers feature a snap-in insert. For small accidents, the insert may just need to be changed. Inserts can be backed with PUL for a little water resistance.
All styles are designed to be made with stretchy cotton knits. Fleece also works well for most styles. It adds bulk but offers a little water resistance.
All styles are available in sizes: 12 months/18 months/2T/3T/4/5/6/7/8 They are said to fit true to average size - I find the briefs fit a bit small. Measurements of the Waist and Thigh are recommended to ensure a better fit. It is important for trainers to fit snug in order to reduce the chances of leaking.

"I bought a fitted diaper/fleece cover combo! We love it! The diaper is extremely well made and the bamboo velour is soo soft! It is very cute and the medium fitted fits my daughter very nicely, with room to grow! I really like that there are no snaps on the inserts, so no snaps rub against her skin like other fitteds we've tried. I al...so like the countour of the inserts and the second, smaller insert is perfect for us. With it being half the size of the other insert, it doesn't add any bulk to the bum of the diaper and I put it in the front for added absorbency over night, because my daughter likes to sleep on her belly! The cover is L/XL so it is a bit big on my little girl, but it is still very cute and she will grow into it soon! Thanks so much, Michelle! We'll be back for more stuff soon!" ... "First off, all I have to say is love, love, love my fleece shorties – I used to think wool was the only way to go. Fleece has way less maintenance and my husband will actually use them on the kids. I could never get him to use the wool soakers. I use them as the kids pj bottoms.
My husband now loves you for the pail liner (and recommendation to put the tea tree oil on the tab you sewed in). Now he doesn’t cringe when opening the diaper pail!! ..."Cassandra

I am guilty of hyena cart addiction, spending wild amounts on custom slots. Sure wish I had of known about Michelle and A Lovely Start earlier, I would of saved a lot of time looking for the perfect longies! :) Her items were comparable to many high end items I have ordered, her prices were fair, and she is local, so even better! :D If you are a fleece person I highly recommend her!" ... "Michelle, the boxers that you made for my son are the best thing ever. He is so excited to go to bed in his "fluffy cozy" PJ's that this has not only solved our night time wet bed problem but also our bed time trials. They kept the bed dry all night and he was comfortable too. Now he is so concerned about wetting his nice new pj's that he no longer wets the bed, he gets up to pee and goes straight back to sleep.

As for the trainers you made for my daughter they fit wonderfully. I love the fleece ones and though we have only been using them now for one day we have had no leaks several accidents but at least she feels it every time she goes, so maybe a connection will be made. Thanks again!" ... Shannon
